Before you buy baby clothes, consider the following…
- Until you know what size and sex baby is, you won’t need much baby clothing
- You might expect baby clothing as gifts for baby if you have not already received them
- Cute little jeans and t-shirts aren’t very practical, but they are cute. Ok, even I can admit that.
- Baby clothing stores will discount off season baby clothing, so remember baby’s projected age in the season you are buying for. The same goes for buying baby clothes online. Those cute baby clothes are no good if they don’t fit baby in the season they are intended for…

Baby clothes should fit well…
that is not too loose and never too tight. Baby cannot tell you how the clothing fits, so baby safety and comfort is all up to you.
After laundering baby’s clothes, be sure to watch for signs of skin reactions to the detergents you use. Sometimes they may be a little too harsh for baby’s delicate new skin. There are baby safe laundry products that can help.
Here are some suggestions from the Baby Checklist:
- Three or four babygros or all-in-one sleepsuits. Small babies tend to live in these during their first few months and really don’t need to wear anything else, apart from additional warm clothing if it’s cold.
- three or four body suits, are essential, with envelope necks and poppers underneath. Use these under babygros or on their own if it’s warm enough. Consider short sleeve ones if it’s really hot season.
- Six side-snap T-shirts
- Four to six one-piece undershirts that snap around the crotch.
- A small baby cap (although the hospital will probably give you one)
- Six pairs of socks/booties
- Two to three soft, comfortable daytime outfits. Just a few items in newborn size. Make the rest clothing in the 3- or 6-month size—baby grows quickly. If sleepwear is too big it’s a safety hazard, make sure it fits.
- Cotton sweater or light jacket
- Brimmed hat in summer
- For winter a snowsuit with attached mittens or fold-over cuffs, or heavy bunting, booties, heavy stroller blanket, warm knit hat
